"Native Americans,
Treaties and Spirit"
Helen Tanner
Helen Tanner, Senior Research Fellow at Chicago’s Newberry Library,
whose Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History has been called “a quantum
leap forward in the study and understanding of Indian history,” will
speak on “the blessings of balance—an Indian viewpoint.” Dr. Tanner is a
recognized authority on Indian treaties and has often testified in cases
presented before the Indian Claims Commission. She also serves as a
historical consultant in other cases of tribal litigation. It wasn’t
until after the Civil War that Northern Michigan Indians began to be
affected by increasing numbers of white settlers. Adverse effects of the
influx of whites in the mid-1800s and their repercussions exist today.
You are invited to remain after the service for a discussion of her
topic.
